Career Pathways Presentation

Mr. Javier Vigil and Ms. Melisha Montano from the National Latino Behavioral Health Association did a presentation to Sophomore and Junior students last March 12, 2026.

Students who are 15-18 years old from Rio Arriba or Sandoval county qualify to be temporary employees. The hourly rate is $22.52. They would work from 5 - 10 hours per week (15 weeks) from March 16 - June 30 for a total of 75 hours (Total amount: $1,689.00). This is a great opportunity for a young person to gain professional experience, learn from a great curriculum, and earn some money. Part of their work experience will be to participate at a Youth Summit in Albuquerque and help organize a similar event for Rio Arriba county. It truly is a great opportunity!

Escalante Students Build Indoor Greenhouse with Help from Jacob Torres
Escalante Students Build Indoor Greenhouse with Help from Jacob Torres

After Jacob Torres’ inspiring visit to Escalante Middle High School, students took his lessons to heart by creating an indoor greenhouse to grow pepper plants. The entire setup—complete with PVC framing, clear plastic sheeting, LED grow lights, and sensors—was generously provided by Torres himself.

The greenhouse allows students to monitor and gather data on temperature, humidity, and soil moisture, fostering hands-on STEM learning. Inspired by Torres' space experiments, they’re exploring optimal conditions for plant growth and connecting their findings to real-world agricultural innovation.

“This project is exciting,” one student shared. “We’re learning how to grow plants just like Mr. Torres did in space!”

The initiative not only honors Torres’ visit but also sparks curiosity and collaboration among students, bridging the gap between classroom learning and cutting-edge science.
